Approche microbiologique de l'anchoitage. ArchiMer
Campello, Francois.
The maturation of salted anchovies leads to a product of particular organoleptic properties. The manufacturers have to resolve many problems. A thorough investigation of the phenomenons which occur is necessary to resolve them. The maturation is conducted at different temperatures. The present paper reports the microbiological variations of the present microfloras, from hyper-halophilic to the non-halophilic, which escort organoleptical and biochemical ones chiefly at 20 degree C. If the maturation's temperature is maintained high (28 degree C) there is a strong proteolysis. At 20 degree C the organoleptical characters appear within 2 months.

Biologie du copepode Lernaeenicus sprattae Sowerby, 1806) et ses actions pathogenes sur les populations de sardines des cotes du Languedoc-Roussillon. ArchiMer
El Gharbi, Salwa; Rousset, Viviane; Raibaut, André.
Lernaeenicus sprattae is a blood-feeding copepod parasite of the pilchard, Sardian pilchardus . The larval stages of L. sprattae attach to the skin or the fins of the larval fish when the fish enter the lagoons. The mature, and in some cases ovigerous females of L.sprattae seek out the base of the fins or directly implant in the eye of juvenile or adult pilchards. The copepod has a particularly serious effect at the site of infection: its feeding has a severe effect on the fish. The pilchard returns to its breeding grounds in the open sea at the end of summer; this migration allows the copepod to complete its reproductive cycle and a new cycle of infestation is able to begin.

Caractérisation biologique et variation des captures de la grande alose (Alosa alosa) par unité d'effort sur le fleuve Adour (Pyrénées Atlantiques, France) ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick; Martinet, Jean-pierre; Badia, Jacques.
The study of logbooks from commercial fishermen on the Adour River and commercial samples allowed characterization of the allis shad population (Alosa alosa L.) caught during the period 1988-91. A better knowledge of the influence of hydroclimatic factors (rate of river flow and intensity of tidal coefficient) on the catchability of the species in that never was also obtained. Allis shad are mainly recruited to this fishery from the beginning of April to the end of May: between 78 and 89 % depending on year. Males in the population were on average younger than females. However, at the same age, males were significantly smaller in size and in weight than females. These results reinforce the knowledge already obtained on French stocks in the Loire and...

Diferenciação morfométrica e osteológica entre Ramnogaster arcuata (Jenyns) e Platanichthys platana (Regan) (Teleostei, Clupeidae) Zoologia
Campello,Fernando Dantas; Bemvenuti,Marlise de Azevedo.
Ramnogaster arcuata (Jenyns, 1842) and Platanichthys platana (Regan, 1917), found at the estuary of Lagoa dos Patos and coastal lagoon (Lagoa Mirim) at the South of Brazil, are two sympatric clupeid fishes with very similar features. In order to clarify their taxonomic and geographical situation, delimiting its occurrence in fresh waters, a comparative study of the bony structures of the head, anal and dorsal fins and ventral scutes of these two sardines was developed. The osteological study with clear and stain technique included more information about the differentiation of the groups from the bones of the supramaxilla, dentary, pterygiophore and epipleural ribs. Variations on the body shape of those species were analyzed through the multivariate...

Length correction for early-juvenile Brazilian herring Sardinella janeiro (Eigenmann, 1894) after preservation in formalin, ethanol and freezing Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Joaquim N. S.; Araújo,Francisco G.; Silva,Débora S..
This work aims to quantify the variation in total length and body mass for the early-juvenile Brazilian herring Sardinella janeiro and to determine total length and body mass correction equation to allow fresh measures to be calculated from preserved ones. Fishes were randomly assigned to one of five preservation methods (freezing at - 20º C, 2.5% and 5% formalin, 70% and 95% ethanol), and measured for total length (TL) and body mass (W) before preservation, and on days 5, 15, 30, and 60 after storage. Significant reductions in total length and body mass occurred during the first 5 days after preservation and continued to contract significantly at a lesser rate through 30 days in most methods. Exceptions were shown for body mass in freezing and 5%...

Microflore et anchoitage. ArchiMer
Campello, Francois.
The author studies the microbial phenomena which occur during the maturation of French anchovies, some from the Basque, the others from the Roussillon coast. There are some differences in relation with the origin of the fishes. On a marine agar, the microflora of the Mediterranean ones is almost constant or in a light diminution while that of the Atlantic ones is climbing during 9 weeks before a decline. On an extremely salted agar and in the both origins the archaebacteria are increasing in number during 5 to 6 weeks and diminishing before. The complete ripening is obtained within 16-17 weeks. The limits of the significance of the microbiological analysis are discussed.

Quelques aspects socio-economiques de la pecherie artisanale beninoise de Pointe-Noire (Congo). ArchiMer
Gobert, Bertrand.
The foreign artisanal fishery of Pointe-Noire (Congo) significantly evolved since its beginning, in the 1950s, by the number of fishermen and canoes, as well as the fishing techniques used and by its socio-economic organization. The fishery for Sardinella by surface gill-nets, its main activity, is based on common ownership and savings, thus allowing partial reinvestment of fishing revenues, the riskier (such as bottom gill-net) being left to individual initiatives. The foreign fishery employs many Congolese fishermen, in a permanent or very occasional way. However no improvement effect seems to have taken place in favor of the local artisanal fishery.

Spawning energetics and otolith microchemistry provide insights into the stock structure of bonga shad Ethmalosa fimbriata ArchiMer
Doering, Julian; Wagner, Carola; Tiedemann, Maik; Brehmer, Patrice; Ekau, Werner.
The gross energy content of spawning batches and the microchemistry of sagittal otoliths in individual female bonga shad Ethmalosa fimbriata were compared between contrasting sampling sites at the Senegalese southern coast and inside the hypersaline Sine Saloum Estuary. Results show that females spawning in the estuary's middle reaches invested almost three times more energy into reproduction (115 +/- 65 J g(-1) body mass) than their neritic counterparts (39 +/- 34 J g(-1) body mass). Also, female otolith levels of Ba:Ca, Sr:Ca and Zn:Ca either differed significantly between study sites or could be linked to heterogeneous environmental variables. A quadratic discriminant function analysis provided evidence of segregated spawning populations of E. fimbriata...
